These images are drawn from a 278-page photographic documentary chronicling the evolution of the village of Bangalow between 1900 to 1960. Called A Splash of Colour, the book to be launched on 28 August at Ninbella Gallery, and is an ideal keepsake. 

Images from the Bangalow Historical Society’s archives were selected by local filmmaker and photographer, Terry Bleakley – who restored and colourised them to make the past more vidid and accessible to a modern audience – in a collaboration with Heather West. 

“Above all, this publication seeks to move history beyond glass cabinets and museum walls”, say the book’s authors. “It invites readers to see the past not as something distant or untouchable, but as a living thread connecting old residents and new, past and present. 

“In breathing colour and life back into these archival photographs, the Bangalow Historical Society hopes to inspire a deeper appreciation for the stories, people and heritage integrity that continue to define Bangalow and the surrounding region today.” 

The museum, 16 local businesses, families and individuals met the significant production costs. 

After the launch, A Splash of Colour will be on sale in Bangalow at Wax Jambu, Our Corner Store, The General Store and Bangalow Museum, and in Byron Bay at The Book Room. 

Proceeds will support Bangalow Historical Society.
